I need to make some changes to my Nas setup and was wondering what the drawbacks are to:
1) running omv of a usb stick ( and what usb stick are suggested)
2) running omv of a ssd which I would also use for data storage ( for sync applications and things that a frequently accessed so the hdd doesn't have to spin up)
Installing OpenMediaVault
As specified in an earlier post i'm using a very low powered 'NAS'. I got recommended OpenMediaVault but having some troubles during installation. I don't have any dedicated boot drive, and would rather not have to use a 2tb drive for a 2gb installation. Does anyone have a method of installing OpenMediaVault on a partition, er resizing it after installing? I have gotten recommended not to install it to a flash drive as the amount of reads would kill it rather quickly.
TLDR; can I install OMV without using an entire drive?
edit: I do of course know that I could just buy a boot drive and not have to deal with it, but I would much rather not have to spend any money
I've been trying to install OpenMediaVault 4.1.3
from an usb stick on my HP Microserver Gen8. I created the boot stick in various ways (dd
, etcher
, UNetbootin
) but during installation (in the partitioning step) I repeatedly ended up with the following error message (and later 'creating ext4 file system failed' appeared):
To create the stick with dd
, I followed the official instructions here. I also made sure that SATA support is set to AHCI and I also tested versions 3.0.94 and 4.0.14.
What can I do to solve this issue?
1 Answer
I've managed to solve the issue in the following way:
- burn the openmediavault iso on a cd
format the usb stick with ext4 file system, under macOS I did this with:
2.1
brew install e2fsprogs
2.2
sudo $(brew --prefix e2fsprogs)/sbin/mkfs.ext4 /dev/disk3
plug in the ext4-formatted usb stick, boot from cd and follow the installation wizard -> partitioning doesn't fail in this constellation for me

Hi, Welcome to SGW. The serial number coding system changed to the serial number preceding the date code. Browning auto 5 20 gauge. Serial began with 1000 – 99999 followed by the model code 221 Sweet Sixteen and 171 Superlight 16 and two letter year( T=6, R=7, P=8). See Browning Website 1976 1000 221 RT – Sweet Sixteen 1000 171 RT – Superlight Sixteen 1978 1000 221 RP – Sweet Sixteen 1987 1000 221 PR – Sweet Sixteen. Dating these old guns are at best an educated guess.

Hi,
I want to buy the HP ProLiant MicroServer N54L and use Open Media Vault with 2x 1.5TB harddisks in RAID1.
Additionally to the external USB ports, the N54L also has one internal USB port.
Based on my understanding and according to the Wiki (wiki.openmediavault.org/index.php?title=Installation) it would be possible to install Open Media Vault 'on' a USB stick.
However, accordingto the Wiki it's not recommended:
What is your experience?
Are there any disadvantages?
Thanks and best regards!
P.S.: I was also searching for this topic within the forum but could only find how to install Open Media Vault 'from' a USB stick, whereas I want to install it 'on' a USB stick.
